Retrofit Insulation in North Idaho

Empire Insulation sprays closed-cell foam into existing homes and buildings across North Idaho. The right time is when walls, ceilings or roof decks are already open for a remodel or re-roof. Foam insulates and seals the drafts an older building lets in, and Nick Bond quotes and sprays the job himself.

Open walls are your chance to stop the drafts

With the drywall or roofing off, closed-cell foam insulates and air-seals in one pass. Once the walls close again, that access is gone.

What we handle

Foam the open walls before they close again

Older homes and buildings lose heat through gaps you cannot see: around windows and doors, along the framing and under the roof. A remodel or re-roof opens those spaces up. While they are open, closed-cell foam can be sprayed straight into the cavities, where it insulates and seals the gaps in one pass. Once the drywall or decking goes back on, that chance is gone.

Spray foam needs open framing, and Empire does not do blown-in insulation, so the plan follows what you have open. Tell Nick which walls, ceilings or roof sections are coming apart and when, and he will quote the areas that make sense to foam.

In a lived-in house, protecting what's already there is most of the prep: a lot of plastic, Ram Board over finished floors, and proper ventilation while the foam goes on and afterward. Nick sprays it himself with one consistent crew member, and an Angi customer review calls Nick and his guys "extremely clean and organized."

Retrofit foam goes where the framing is open. These are the problems it is used to fix in an existing building.

  • Drafty rooms in an older house

Foam seals the gaps around windows, doors and framing wherever they are exposed, so wind has fewer ways in. Comfort also depends on your heating and ventilation.

  • Walls open for a remodel

With the drywall off, foam goes into the stud cavities and seals the leaks around them before the wall closes again.

  • Heat loss through the roof

During a re-roof, foam on the open roof deck insulates and seals in one pass. It moves the insulated boundary, so plan the ventilation and moisture control first.

  • A shop or garage never insulated

Foam can go on exposed framing in an existing shop, garage, pole barn or metal building, turning a cold shell into a space you can heat.

  • Air sealing and hybrid packages

Where full-depth foam isn't in the budget, a hybrid, part spray foam and part fiberglass, can cut the cost. Air sealing may also suit the areas you have open.

What affects the price

Every retrofit is quoted on its own, and estimates are free. The scope comes down to which areas are open, how much surface gets foamed, how hard it is to reach and what is already in place.

JobWhat affects the quote
Retrofit Insulation Open areas, access and existing materials
  • Open wall and roof area: Walls, ceilings and roof decks are priced by the surface being covered. Floor area alone does not tell you the amount of foam.
  • Foam type and thickness: Empire installs 2-lb closed-cell and HFO closed-cell foam. Thicker foam means more material and more spray time, and the right thickness depends on the assembly.
  • Access to the work area: Tight attics, low crawl spaces and framing with obstructions take longer to spray and can change the scope.
  • Existing materials: Old insulation or debris in the cavities has to be cleared before spraying. Ask whether each estimate includes that prep.
  • Coverings after the foam: Empire doesn't install drywall; it's a separate trade, and Nick sometimes refers it out. Plan who covers the foam before spray day so estimates compare fairly.

Questions we get

Can foam go into walls that are already finished?

Spray foam needs open cavities. That is why retrofit work lines up with remodels, re-roofs and any job where the drywall, ceilings or roof decking are already off. Empire does not do blown-in insulation, so a closed wall is not a fit unless it gets opened.

Do you remove the old insulation first?

No. Empire does not offer insulation removal. If old material is in the way, plan for someone else to clear it before spray day. When you compare estimates, ask whether removal and prep are included in each one.

Does the foam need to be covered?

In most living spaces, yes. Spray foam is combustible, and codes generally call for an approved thermal barrier, such as gypsum drywall, between foam and occupied space. Some attics and crawl spaces allow an ignition barrier instead. The product and local code decide it.

How do you protect finished rooms?

With a lot of prep and a lot of plastic. Finished surfaces get covered, finished floors get Ram Board, and the space is properly ventilated while the foam goes on and afterward. Tell Nick which rooms are finished and lived in when he looks at the job, so the prep is planned into the quote.

What happens on spray day?

Clear the rooms being worked on as much as you can. If you physically can't move everything, tell Nick and the crew will help. Nick sprays the foam himself with one consistent crew member and stays on site start to finish. Your household stays out of the work area during spraying, cleanup and the product's re-occupancy period, so ask for the return instructions before you pick a date.

What should I send to get an estimate?

Call, text or use the form with your town, what you are opening up and when. Photos of the open framing help. Nick gives a rough number from that and a firm quote once he has seen the job. Estimates are free, and veterans and service members get a discount that depends on the job.

What happens next

  1. Reach out

Call, text or send the form with your building and what you want insulated.

  2. Rough estimate, then a firm quote

Nick gives a rough number from what you send, then a firm quote once he has seen the job. Simple pole barns can often be quoted remotely.

  3. Clear the building

Move everything you can off the floor and out of the way. If you physically can't, tell Nick and the crew will help.

  4. Spray day and cleanup

Nick sprays the foam with one consistent crew member and stays on site throughout. Jobs are left cleaner than when the crew arrived.
