What we do in Rathdrum
A cold barn and a heated shop are different jobs
Rathdrum is out on the Rathdrum Prairie, north of Post Falls and well north of Empire's base in St. Maries. For a pole barn or metal building there, the first question is whether you will heat it. A cold building mostly needs condensation control. Through a North Idaho winter, moist air inside meets cold steel, turns to water and drips on whatever is parked or stored below. Closed-cell foam sprayed straight onto the panels keeps that air off the metal. For cold storage Nick usually goes 4 to 6 inches.
A heated shop needs a sealed shell so the heat stays in. Nick's rule of thumb there is 2 inches of closed-cell on the walls and 3 on the roof, 3 and 4 at most. Fiberglass fastened to a metal roof deck tends to trap moisture against the steel; foam bonds to it instead.
Once it is sprayed, exposed foam can be painted for a cleaner look. Paint is not a thermal barrier, so the plan depends on how you use the building.
Closed-cell foam is what goes on Rathdrum barns, shops and houses, in 2-lb or HFO. Use the service links below for pole barns, shops and metal buildings.
Pole barn spray foam
Foam between the girts and purlins and onto the panels. Simple pole barns can often be quoted from photos and dimensions alone.
Shop insulation
A sealed, insulated shell for a shop you heat. Foam fills around posts, girts and door framing in one pass.
Metal building insulation
Closed-cell bonds to steel and keeps warm, moist air off it. It helps control condensation; it does not repair roof leaks.
Closed-cell spray foam
Roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch and a Class II vapor retarder at 1.5 to 2 inches. Open-cell is available on request.
Painting exposed foam
A coat of paint gives foamed shop and barn walls a finished look. It is not a thermal barrier.
Homes and new construction
Foam in open walls and roofs before drywall, and attic or crawl-space work in existing homes.
Crawl spaces
Foam on foundation walls and rim joists, with vapor barriers or encapsulation. Ground water and drainage need their own fix.
Shipping containers
Containers used for storage or a workspace get foam on the steel walls and roof to insulate and seal them.

Customer reviews & pricing

I've utilized many insulation companies over the years and rarely write reviews, but Nick and his guys did an outstanding job and I would HIGHLY recommend them. Their price was excellent, the work was perfect, and they are extremely clean and organized.

What affects the price
Empire does not publish prices. A simple pole barn can often be priced from photos and dimensions; other jobs get a rough estimate first and a firm quote after Nick sees them. Estimates are free.
| Job | What affects the quote |
|---|---|
| Closed-Cell Spray Foam | Area sprayed, installed thickness and access |
| Shop & Garage Insulation | Building size, wall and roof area, and how the space is used |
| Pole Barn Insulation | Building size, wall and roof area, and foam thickness |
| Crawl Space Insulation | Wall and rim-joist area, access and moisture plan |
| Attic Insulation | Insulated boundary chosen, area and access |
| New Construction Insulation | Wall and roof area and the build stage |
| Commercial Insulation | Scope, access and time out of the work area |
| Metal Building Insulation | Steel area covered, surface condition and access |
| Retrofit Insulation | Open areas, access and existing materials |
- Heated or cold storage: Cold storage usually takes 4 to 6 inches; a heated shop 2 on the walls and 3 on the roof. Depth drives material.
- Wall and roof area: Pricing follows the steel and framing area sprayed, including the roof, not the size of the slab.
- What is in the building: A cleared building sprays faster. If you cannot move everything, tell Nick and the crew will help.
- Paint or coatings: Painting exposed foam or a thermal-barrier coating adds scope, so ask whether it is in each bid.

Questions we get
Does Empire Insulation work in Rathdrum?
Yes. Nick Bond runs Empire from St. Maries and travels 100+ miles for projects in Idaho, so Rathdrum is well within range. He quotes the job himself, sprays it with one consistent crew member and stays on site from start to finish.
Can you quote my pole barn without coming out?
Often, yes. Simple pole barns can usually be quoted without a site visit. Send the dimensions, the eave height, whether you will heat it and photos of the framing and panels. Nick gives a rough number from that and firms it up when needed.
Will foam stop my metal roof from dripping?
Closed-cell foam on the panels keeps the warm, moist air and vapor drive off the cold steel, which is what makes it sweat. It helps control condensation as part of the right assembly. It does not fix roof leaks or replace ground-moisture control.
Is spray foam worth it in a pole barn?
In a pole barn or metal shop it is about the only good way to insulate. Fiberglass on a roof deck tends to trap moisture and sag over the years. Foam usually pays for itself in 3 to 10 years, so it makes less sense if you will sell soon.
What should I do before spray day?
Move everything you can off the floor and away from the walls so the crew can reach the framing. If you physically cannot, tell Nick and the crew will help. Plan to stay out of the work area during spraying and the re-occupancy period.
